What’s in my nursing bag: Essentials items I bring to every shift
As a new grad nurse, these are items that I carry with me to every shift

Nursing shifts can be long, unpredictable, and exhausting- which is why it’s important to be as prepared as possible. I graduated from nursing school in December 2024 and have carried these items with me to every shift since.

The Bag itself
I use this puffy tote bag in the beige color and have loved it since I opened it from the package. My favorite thing about it is how much room it has. All of my essential items plus more easily fit within all of the multiple pockets.

Stethoscope and case
I bring my 3M Littmann Classic stethoscope in ceil blue to every shift. It’s super lightweight and has great sound quality. I purchased this at the beginning on nursing school and it still looks brand new 3 years later. I keep it in this sturdy case to help keep it clean and protected.

Scissors and pen light bundle
Again, these are essentials that I use every shift. Scissors are so handy especially when the stubborn medication packages do not want to tear apart. I also purchased this set before nursing school and continue to use and love them.

Pens
I love to color coordinate my paper. I take report using black pens and then will use these colored pens throughout my shift to help me organize essential areas like pain, labs, etc.

Water bottle
As nurses we never know exactly what kind of day we are walking into when we clock in. Will we be able to sit and catch up on emails or will we only have time to chart? A good water bottle that stays cold throughout my shift has been essential. Each time I walk past my spot, I can quickly grab a cold sip. These are the two that I rotate between.

In my bag these are the other items that I use every shift. These just help make my shifts run a little bit more smooth.

Do you have a survival kit?
Every nurse has their own version of a “survival kit” but these items above are what help keep me comfortable and efficient through my 12 hour shifts. Whether you are a newer nurse like me or someone who is wanting to feel more organized, I hope you can take my advice and pack your bag with confidence.
